Internists and Modern Specialization, Part 2

The American College of Physicians classifies internists, or, internal medicine doctors, as “physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults.” Much like your family physician, an internist is a personal physician who is able to manage both common and complex illnesses of adolescents, adults and the elderly. However, they mostly focus on young adults to seniors.

These are typical specialties for internal medicine physicians:

This specialist treats conditions such as abdominal pain, ulcers, diarrhea, cancer and jaundice and performs complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using endoscopes to visualize internal organs.

Sports Medicine An Internist who specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries related to participating in sports and/or exercise. In addition to the study of those fields that focus on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of injuries, sports medicine also deals with illnesses and diseases that might have effects on health and physical performance.

Geriatric Medicine An Internist who has special knowledge of the aging process and special skills in the diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitative aspects of illness in the elderly. This specialist cares for geriatric patients in the patient’s home, the office, long-term care settings such as nursing homes and the hospital.

This physician often diagnoses and treats AIDS patients and patients with fevers which have not been explained. Infectious disease specialists may also have expertise in preventive medicine and travel medicine.

Interventional Cardiology An area of medicine within the subspecialty of Cardiology, which uses specialized imaging and other diagnostic techniques to evaluate blood flow and pressure in the coronary arteries and chambers of the heart, and uses technical procedures and medications to treat abnormalities that impair the function of the cardiovascular system.

Medical Oncology An Internist (Medical Oncologist) who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer and other benign and malignant tumors. This specialist decides on and administers therapy for these malignancies, as well as consults with surgeons and radiotherapists on other treatments for cancer.

Pulmonary Disease An Internist who treats diseases of the lungs and airways. The pulmonologist diagnoses and treats cancer, pneumonia, pleurisy, asthma, occupational and environmental diseases, bronchitis, sleep disorders, emphysema and other complex disorders of the lungs.

Transplant Hepatology An Internist with special knowledge and the skill required of a Gastroenterologist to care for patients prior to and following hepatic transplantation that spans all phases of liver transplantation. Selection of appropriate recipients requires assessment by a team having experience in evaluating the severity and prognosis of patients with liver disease.

Critical Care Medicine An Internist trained in Critical Care Medicine has expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and support of critically ill and injured patients, particularly trauma victims and patients with multiple organ dysfunction. This physician also coordinates patient care among the primary physician, critical care staff and other specialists.

Hillside Chiropractor Discusses Knee Anatomy

Dr. Mike Kochanski of Celar Chiropractic is a certified chiropractic sports physician that treats many other areas of complaint besides low back pain. The Hillside chiropractor commonly treats injuries to the knees, and therefore must have a great understanding of knee anatomy.

The skeletal structure of the knee is formed from three different bones – the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone) and patella (knee cap). The lower end of the femur connects with the tibia and patella at the knee. Here, the femur expands into two protuberances known as the medial and lateral condyles, which meet with both the medial and lateral condyles ofthe tibia and two articular facets of the patella. As the femur inclines inward from the hip, the knee joints are closer to the midline of the body than the hips. This inclination tends to be greater in females because of their wider pelvis. This can lead to more problems, especially if the female has very wide hips, increasing the strain on the knees.Unlike other joints in the body, which are mostly formed by the intersection of two bones, the knee comprises three different connections: two tibiofemoral hinge joints and the planar (sliding) patellofemoral joint.  The tibiofemoral joints are formed where the lateral and medial condyles of the femur meet with the lateral and medial condyles of the tibia, respectively. Two articular menisci (fibrocartilage discs), one lateral and one medial, also form part of these joints. These act to fill the spaces between the bones and help with the circulation of synovial fluid. The medial meniscus is often injured, causing medial knee pain and swelling in the joint. The patellofemoral joint is formed by the convergence of the patellar surface on the front of the femur with the back of the patella.  Improper movement of the patella often leads to pain.Movements permitted at the knee joint include flexion (bending), extension (straightening), a small amount of medial (inward) rotation and some lateral (outward) rotation of the bent leg. The joint is supported by a series of muscle tendons, ligaments and some capsular fibers.

Advantages of Getting a Hair Transplant

Many people wonder if it is worth it to get a hair transplant. A lot of people think this is strictly a cosmetic procedure that is completely unnecessary for living. However, there are a lot of benefits to this cosmetic procedure. For example, people with thinning hair often have a lot of trouble getting jobs, getting promoted, or getting a date. Although a few males with the right facial structure would look very good with a bald head, most males don’t. And bald females have never been popular nor accepted. That is why the best solution for the hair problem is to get a transplant.

There are transplant locations all over the country including with hair transplant alaska. In order to achieve the full advantages of this procedure. It is very important to talk with the doctor about expectations. The patient needs to be clear about what he or she wants from the transplant procedure once it has been completed. On the other hand, the doctor needs to tell the patient the limits of the benefits of this surgery. For example, it may not be possible for a woman to have the hair density of someone who is twenty years old. If expectations don’t match, the patient should not go through with the procedure. If the expected benefits and limitations are acceptable, then go through with the procedure.

A nice benefit of the hair transplant boston procedure is that it can be done on an outpatient basis. It will take the whole day to complete starting from the morning. With the anesthesia, there should be little or no pain. The patient simply needs to lie down for the donation portion of the procedure as if getting a back massage. After the donor part of the procedure is complete, there will be plenty of opportunities for rest breaks as well as opportunities to use the bathroom.

After the end of the procedure, most patients only require mild pain killer medications in order to recover completely. In short, this is a relatively minor treatment that does not require an overnight stay in the hospital. It has been done thousands of times with little risk to the patient.

Is Our Tap Water Really Safe? RO Can Help!

Most people are ignorant to what is in our water, and really couldn’t care less. When they see the billboards and ads, they are overjoyed to hear their water is safe and clean, but the facts just aren’t presented (or hidden form us all), and misleads everyone. Even today, tests that are done on water do not account for everything, as they are not even quite sure what is in our water. I mean among the top contaminants like chlorine and fluoride, there are hundreds or even thousands of other chemicals, pesticides, and carcinogens that are present that most people have no idea of, and even if you do a “little” research, your not going to find it. Unless you actually spend time researching this stuff, you won’t find anything but the normal chemicals that are already known by the majority of the population

Water is what we are made of, and is essential to human health, not this poison that they are convincing everyone is water and is safe to drink. I myself have a reverse osmosis water system from Aquasafe - the Maximus II - and have had it for many years, and will always continue to do so as I know what is in our water and know that clean, pure water is essential for life. My water filtration unit removes all contaminants like chlorine, fluoride, lead, mercury, pesticides, etc.., and can’t even stand the thought of drinking tap water, or even bottled water for that matter as most bottled water is essentially tap water anyway, which is whole other story that I won’t get into.

Answering the Pregnancy After Vasectomy Question and Others

There are many questions that people ask about vasectomies. Having all of your questions answered prior to having a vasectomy is important. That’s because this is considered to be a permanent form of birth control and something that you should only do after a lot of thought and consideration about what it means.

Question #1Exactly what is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minor procedure that includes cutting and sealing off each vas deferens. This is typically done by make an incision on each side of the scrotum and then using that incision to access the vas. New procedures such as the no scalpel vasectomy still includes punctures in the scrotum, but they are so small they generally have less pain and swelling and can heal with the use of stitches.

Question #2 – Is it possible to experience a pregnancy after vasectomy?

What many people don’t realize is that the scrotum stores sperm for up to a year, which means that a man can get a woman pregnant after a vasectomy. Typically the highest risk for this is for the first 6 months after the vasectomy occurs. Every doctor who performs a vasectomy will require you to come in for sperm testing at least two times to ensure that you are no longer producing sperm in your semen. If after the second test you continue to have sperm, you will need to use other forms of birth control until your tests come back negative for sperm.

Question #3Is a vasectomy reversal possible if I change my mind?

It is possible to have a successful reversal of your vasectomy after you’ve had a vasectomy, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First of all, a reversal can be costly and ranges in cost between $6,000 to $15,000. Secondly, there is no guarantee for success; no doctor can say for sure if the reversal will produce a viable pregnancy once the procedure is completed.

Another thing that you need to consider is that while your insurance may cover a vasectomy, it won’t cover a reversal. In addition, if you have the reversal and then want a vasectomy again in the future, your insurance will not likely cover the cost of a second vasectomy.

If you have any other questions about a vasectomy you need to ask your doctor before proceeding with the procedure.

Make it a Success, Don’t Wait

Knowing what you want, and having enough hunger to get it is the key to a fulfilling life.  Knowing what you want in life is actually pretty easy, so easy in fact, that we often over look it.  We, as humans, have a funny tendency to make things more complicated than they need to be.  So, I’ll do my best to satisfy our need for complication here.

In my studies of leadership, I’ve learned a pretty powerful formula for getting the things I want in my life.  The formula goes like this.  Know what you want, find out the price, Pay it in full!  It’s that simple.  Since the advent of Walmart, America has been addicted to deep discount shopping.  Nothing wrong with that, but it won’t work on your journey to success.  There is no discount, there is no sale, there is no haggling the price.  If you want success, you must pay the FULL price with a willing heart.  You have to make it a success, you can’t just wait for it.

This requires a great deal of Hard Work.  Let me give you an example I learned just recently.  I was watching a video of Will Smith, and he said that if there was something he wanted, and he had to out run you on a treadmill to get it, he would get it every time.  Because, he said, he’s not afraid to die to get what he wants, and he will not come off of that treadmill until either you stop, or he dies.  The subtle point here is that he’s willing to die for the things that he wants.  Although he doesn’t say this, the other side of that coin is that he doesn’t pursue many things unless he wants them that bad.

So, what do you want in your life that badly?  How do you find something that you want that badly?  This brings us back to the first point; gaining the knowledge of what you want in life is actually pretty easy.  It just takes a decision.

So here it is, to find out what you really want in life.  First thing, STOP searching for yourself!  Ease up on the new fad of inwardness, and finding the power of the universe inside of you.  I know going against all of that is very unpopular today, but that thought pattern is a major contributor to the divorce rate in our country.

Second, make a decision on what you want to do.  There are an infinite number of things you can do, PICK ONE.  How do you know if it’s the right thing for you?  There are only two ways to find that out. One way is to talk to someone who is there, get as much info as possible to see if “there” is worth paying the price.  In many cases, like out founding fathers, you don’t have anyone to ask, so the only way to truly know if it’s the right thing, and if it’s worth it, is to DO IT.

I understand that we don’t want to waist our effort on something that’s big, and not the “right thing.” But here’s the deal, if we wait around for the right thing, we’ll waist all of our efforts on nothing.  The single thing that sets us apart from our greatness once we’ve decided what we want to do is this, “doing the thing we said we were going to do, even when the mood in which we said it is long gone.”

Now, to put a little rigorousness on it, I will say, that you want to spend a little time on this decision to make sure that it fits into the next quote from D.L. Moody.  He says, “Our greatest fear should not be of failure; rather it should be of succeeding at something that doesn’t matter.”  I believe that God put a dream and a seed of greatness in each and every one of us, and we really don’t need to look that hard to find it.  If we do that thing, we won’t have to worry about weather it mattered or not, because it will!  It won’t take you years to find it either, it just takes you making a decision to DO something with all of your heart and effort.  It won’t be easy in fact I promise you it will be hard.  The price is high.  Don’t negotiate, Pay it, pay it in full!  Ask anyone with a fulfilled life from Victor Frankl to Warren Buffet, achieving fulfillment in your Social, Psychological, Physical, Political, Financial, and Spiritual life IS WORTH every bit of “Hard” you go though.

I don’t like Mountain Due, but I love this video.  Here is a guy who knows what he wants, and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.  In this case, I’m not sure the price was worth the reward, but it’s a noble achievement either way.

Turning to Virtual Reality for Therapy

There has been an increase in recent years regarding the amount of research conducted on the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder due to the significant amount of individuals involved in the military who have returned from places such as Afghanistan and Iraq who have seen life altering events and have had difficulties in readjusting to life at home. The average veteran might not seek out a Great Neck NY therapist immediately without the encouraging of family or friends but there is some interesting research being done to include enhanced therapeutic techniques in the treatment of individuals who have been through a traumatic experience and are having difficulties ridding their psyche of the constant invasion of thoughts and mental recreations of events.

An interesting program of therapy was recently developed by a group of psychologists working alongside medical doctors who were interested in treating the mental health issues of individuals who might not have access to therapy in a traditional sense and might benefit from alternative therapeutic strategies. One such group of volunteers was located in Mexico and was given a type of therapy that actually utilizes virtual therapy and was designed to assist individuals suffering from various mental issues in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico where residents have been impacted emotionally from the heavy increase in criminal activity from the drug cartels working at the border to the United States.

The virtual therapy actually recreated violent scenes related to what a patient might have gone through and the individuals going through the therapy were often of the opinion that witnessing those scenes as therapy was helpful.
